A chartering agency, also called a chartering broker, is a professional who engages in the leasing of ships as part of commercial activities. Their primary responsibility is to locate appropriate transportation vessels in the market for customers who seek to rent them, or to find viable cargo options for ship owners. Acting as intermediaries, they facilitate the agreement between ship owners and renters and earn commissions in return. Depending on the identity that the agent represents, they can be classified as either a chartering agent or a ship owner's agent.

A shipping agency is a professional that manages all ship-related transactions on behalf of the carrier. When the carrier trusts the shipping agency to handle all business related to a single voyage, it is referred to as voyage agency. Essentially, freight forwarders act as the intermediary between cargo owners and the relevant transportation and logistics service providers. They facilitate and streamline the transportation process, ensuring that cargo is delivered to its destination through the most efficient and cost-effective means possible.

In international trade and transportation, there are various types of agents involved in the process. One such type is a shipping agent, who represents the interests of shipping companies and provides various services to ensure smooth operations of their vessels in different ports. Another type is a freight forwarder, who acts as an intermediary between the shipper and carrier, organizing the transportation of goods and arranging for necessary paperwork and customs clearance. Additionally, there are consulting agencies that offer specialized services related to international trade and transportation, such as providing intelligence, materials, data, and information to clients based on their specific needs. It's important to note that these agent businesses are often intertwined, with many shipping agents also providing freight forwarding services, and some freight forwarders also acting as shipping agents.
